SPCA Cupcake Day

Firstly, Happy International Cat Day!

This weekend just been, myself along with my brother, Dane AKA. Baker Gatherer, and my pals from Dough Bros participated in the yearly cupcake festivities that the SPCA puts on to raise funds to help save animals in need.

Each year, over 46,000 abused and neglected animals need love, care and shelter. This campaign started in 2009 and New Zealanders from all around the country helped the SPCA raise over $2 million to help these animals, simply by selling cupcakes.

I found out about cupcake day as I volunteer at the Waikato SPCA on Saturdays and wanted to get involved. So I roped Dane into it because he is the baking king and also got Katherine from Dough Bros on board too, to use their space for a couple of hours each day. Katherine and her husband Jake love supporting worthy causes and helping cater events in Hamilton.

We promoted our event via social media and the turnout definitely exceeded our expectation. Dane baked the most beautiful cupcakes and got up at 5am each morning to make them fresh for those who came by. The flavours were: Red Velvet, Triple Chocolate, Lemon Meringue, Salted Caramel Popcorn and Vanilla Berry (VE/GF), and they were an absolute sellout. Dane welcomed people and chatted with folk about the cupcakes, flavours etc, Katherine made the most wonderful hot bevies and as for myself, I was working the till and clearing tables - getting back into former hospo mode. I also made 100 of those kitty cupcake toppers that took a lot of quality time producing - but they were so worth it.

We raised $749 worth of fundraising efforts! Our personal target was $500, so we definitely reached our goal, and then some. If you were at the event, thank you so much for coming and we appreciated your support. If you weren't able to make it along to our pop-up in the weekend, you can still donate online by heading to our fundraising page, here

Overall, it was a great success and we had fun raising money for the animals and fighting cruelty one cupcake at a time.
